Ukraine’s Nataliia Dorbynska
The Heptathlon is one of the Olympics greatest athletic tests. Carried over two days, competitors go through the following seven events that challenge the finest athletes.
- 100 metres hurdles
- high jump
- shot put
- 200 m
- long jump
- javelin throw
- 800 m
Surely the winner is due being crowned as one of the greatest athletes in the world and yet much of the media has let this go unnoticed. In-fact, have you seen much more than modest media coverage on this? I’m a little upset by this to be honest because I have enormous respect for the athletic demands that the sport requires, women’s athletics as whole and have deep respect for the Gold Medalist’s, home nation Ukraine. The Ukraine is an extraordinary nation, rich in heritage and culture is also the home to some of the world’s finest athletes that are never shy of a little old-fashioned hard work.
That said, one of the noble intentions of the Olympics and all of sport for that matter, is to “bring us together”, to let us represent our homeland with honor but in a manner in which borders come down. Sadly when the media picks and chooses what it reports, the question has to be asked, why?
Are athletics really of interest in the media now or is the directive merely to report what is saleable? Possibly worse than that, are only certain brands of women’s athletics of interest, dependent upon how little clothing they wear and are many great athlete’s being ignored?
Whatever the case may be, the Ukraine’s Nataliia Dorbynska won the Gold Medal in the Heptathlon with a stunning performance and in my opinion is one of the finest athletes in the world and deserving of such recognition. The Ukraine, a should take further pride as they claimed the Silver with Lyudmila Blonska brilliant performance. Hyleas Fountain of Harrisburg, PA. and the University of Georgia took the Bronze for USA.
You might not hear a great deal of Nataliia Dorbynska extraordinary athleticism but she is deserving of hero’s welcome as one the finest athletes in the world.
