Exerpt from my Nov 20. 09 blog.. I'm in agrrement with Antonio.. My body in the past responded the quickest with strength training and research bears this out..

"Why lift in the first place, and why strength training produces more results than cardio.’

Studies have estimated that for each pound of muscle that you add to your body, you burn an additional 35 to 50 calories per day. So, an extra 10 pounds of muscle will burn approximately 350 to 500 calories a day, or an extra pound of fat every 7 to 10 days, without making any other changes. In another study, researchers found that regular weight training boosts basal metabolic rate by about 15%. This is because muscle is ‘metabolically active ‘ and burns more calories than other body tissue even when you’re not moving.

So lifting burns fat even when I’m not moving, kewl.
the difference to me is limiting lean body mass loss..

Antonio, I'd strongly, strongly suggest editing the blog post to say something more like this:

awright086 at the gmail.com

The reason is that "web crawler" spam software can nab your email address and add you to their list.

True, though many people assume the following:

1. Muscle can be added rapidly.
2. Muscle burns a lot of calories.

Neither are true from my experience. Sure, muscle does burn more calories than fat, but only something like 10 calories per pound of muscle per day. Nothing to get excited about unless you pack on some serious bulk.

After I finish the 20 Chin-Ups program I'm on, I'm debating going back and doing a 5x5 routine for a month or two. I haven't had my body feel so worked in a long time as I have the last two weeks though.

It'll be interesting to see if I've gained strength lifting with the machine, or lost strength, since the chin-ups thing is all body weight, and reps. Lots and lots of reps and sets. 5 days a week (plus legs on day 6, and cardio every day).

I'm at the same place, lifting heavy and focusing on getting stronger and building muslce. The soreness is brutal, but in my second week it has been a bit better. So you have a little relief to look forward too.
