Fat Friends Make You Fat?

Obesity can spread from person to person, much like a virus, according to researchers. When one person gains weight, close friends tend to gain weight too…

I wasn’t sure what to think of when I read this article the other day. Does it really affect you having a fat friend? All my friends are overweight. Okay except my gym buddies. Why can’t it be the other way around? Why can’t the thin person’s way of living influence the obese friend?

I have fat friends. And it’s true, they can seduce me to eat unhealthy things. Like today I had a humongous chocolate chip (white, milk and pure) cookie and washed it down, hypocritically, with a diet coke. But at the end… aren’t I responsible for what I put in my mouth? I’d be happy if I could convince them to pick up my lifestyle. Like working out and eating clean. But if they don’t want to help themselfs, why should I get pulled down in their unhealthy way of living??

I don’t have that much of a social life anymore. Dining out or going to the movies during the week is cheaper… BUT I HAVE TO WORKOUT!! I’ve missed some workouts because I prefered going out with my friends. It’s a drag when I hear all the fun and inside jokes I’ve missed because I wasn’t there. I sometimes feel left out.

I want to workout and get the body I’ve always dreamed of, but I don’t want to miss the fun things in life…

and that includes my fat friends!!

It’s so true! Quite the paradox I know, Im the same exact way with my friends! I’m sure we influence our friends positively in some way shape or form though:) You’re lookin’ good! Even for eating cookies:) Have a great week!

I feel your pain, its awful missing things with friends because you have to go to the gym. My friends do not understand at all, and will give me "the look" when I say I have to go to the gym on an evening. Occassionally I will even hear, "missing one day at the gym isn’t going to hurt you". But, you and I both know, its not the one missed day I am worried about, its the pattern of missed days that follows. We just have to stick to our resolve I guess.

I have to agree. Our fat fans are never really infuenced by us, but we are influenced by them. They use rationale such as, well, if you die tomorrow, you would have had a boring life. Or you only life once, so why not by happy and eat what you want. Just becuase we workout doesn’t guarantee us long life, but neither does being fat. Like you, i just want to look good. i want to look like the people that i admire. It is a boring life at times, i will admit, but in the end, what have you really missed- late night parties that help you age faster, eating plenty of fast food that will give you a heart attack and other problems. You will miss the occasional hangover or just being lazy. To me, life is so much more than that- in my 20’s, i was young and dumb and thought that partying was all that i ever needed to do. Now, that i have grown up and see what is truly important- all that other stuff doesn’t matter. You true friends will never force u to do anything. They just want you to be happy, even if you only eat one cookie- once a month :-) Take care. Just keep doing what you are doing. I have a small group of people that i truly call my friends and even though 80% of them don’t workout, they at least understand why i do. I hope this helps.

" Tell me who is you buddy ad I will tell you who you are."

It typical that if you walk with smart people you are smart and if you walk with people in some interst it the same for you. Just look at any place you will see the people who are similar in interst walk together. The jocky with the Jockies and the nerd with the nerds

It does work the other way around, you just have to work at it. Its very difficult at first but they do come around. Most of my overweight friends aren’t that bad but I do have a few that are OverObese. Maybe one or two.

They try to use that reasoning but deep down, I know they’re looking for a way to change their size and weight by making it as subtle as possible so of course, I work on the OverObese friends first. As soon as their weight goes down, everyone else starts to follow the pattern and well … I hope in the process everyone becomes lean and happy as opposed to fat and happy.

I do not buy into that articles main point. If you feel stongly about living a healthy lifestyle, your overweight friends influence most likely will never be enough to deter you. At the end of the day, it all boils down to the choices you (YOU) decide to make…not the choices you make, based on the influence of others.
