Bad workouts VS good workouts

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

Is it true that "JUST GETTING TO THE GYM IS A SUCCESSFUL WORKOUT"?

I have found that the real difference between a lousy or tough workout and a great workout is really only 5-10% at most.  I certainly don’t lift 50-75% more weight on a great day, compared to a bad day.  For a bad workout, I might lift 85-90% of my normal weight, or only get 7-8 reps compared to a normal 10 reps.  Unless I’m nursing an injury.

So, get to the gym.  Or hit the running trail.  Get on that bike.  Whatever.  Because…..

Failure / Taking 2 steps backward

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

We all have times when we fall short of our goal, or slip-up along the way.  I see many posts and profiles where consistency with eating clean is frustrating and a challenge.  (This is certainly the case for yours truly, as well)

It helps to keep in mind a quote I heard from Zig Ziglar:  "FAILURE IS AN EVENT, IT IS NOT A PERSON.  YESTERDAY REALLY DID END LAST NIGHT."

For me, it also helps to remember that BB, exercise and nutrition are not the ultimate end goal.  Yes, I do want to have a muscular, cut and healthy body.  Yet my life is not all about having the perfect physique and level of fitness.  They should be tools to enrich life, not become our reason for living.

Have a blessed day.  (And lift some iron and eat clean)

Priorities / Perspective

1ST BLOG ENTRY:  I usually workout M-F in the morning, at 5-5:30am before work.  I’ve been getting up early now to hit the gym for 6 yrs, so it’s ingrained as a habit.  Nowadays, I wake up before my alarm on many mornings.  The body is simply an awesome machine.

My hope is that I use my workouts as a means to an end, not an end in itself.  I love working out, and it’s one of the best parts of my day.  Certainly a great way to start the day.  It’s a rare day that I’m not stoked while heading for the gym.  However, sometimes, I have to remind myself that working out is one of the many tools God provides to enrich our lives.  My level of fitness should enhance my enjoyment and productivity in life, not become my primary focus.

SO HERE’S TO GOOD WORKOUTS AND OPPORTUNITIES TO ENCOURAGE & BLESS SOMEONE TODAY.
