Mom back in the hospital…

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

My mother is back in the hospital. She had a little setback called ‘neutropenia’ and extreme sensitivity to chemo. Yeah Sunday really sucked a$$ and super depressing. However, I’ve been bike riding around Manhattan instead of paying for the subway and it’s a great stress reliever and mind clearer. If cycling through rush hour traffic doesn’t clear the mind and help one focus I don’t know what will!!

Mom back home

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

My mother is back home. Time to get back on the fitness bandwagon. Eating in the city is totallyt expensive but I learned that bikeriding in the city is totally awesome!!! My husband sent me a video of my peeps. I’m looking forward to eating designer eggs and putting on some winter muscle. My ladies won’t be laying eggs till November. The poor turkey though. I don’t think things are going to end well for it :( I’m sooooo exhausted. Going to take a nap and then go for a bike ride. I didn’t get to exercise much but I tried to walk as much as possible around the hospital. All worth it considering my mom is still here!

Exercise in the City

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

I did kundalini yoga today with my mother. Well she was in bed and did the breathing exercises and the meditation. I spent the night and so getting to a gym is tough. Maybe today I’ll see if I can use the free passes I obtained from Vitamin Shoppe. I doubt though. She’s starting chemo today and it’s all about her not me. I think I’m doing just enough to prevent total deconditioning.

Officially city biker scum yet?

Monday, June 8th, 2009

I guess not. I don’t have provocative stickers on my bicycle and I’ve not banged on a cab’s hood with my foot yet. Today I rode my bicycle from Penn Station to 57th and Lex (pit stop at Juan Valdez Coffee House) and continued on to Memorial Sloan Kettering. I took a break and rode down to the Vitamin Shoppe on 80th for a chocolate run (Auntie Flo is a few stops away from town). My mother asked me to stay another week and so I’ve picked up a few gym pass at the VS. Today I ate :o atmeal, fresh fruits, green protein bar.

Lee Haney is the Real Deal

Friday, June 5th, 2009

I’m watching some Lee Haney videos right now. I won’t post them because I’m certain someone has posted the collection from YouTube. Anyway, today I walked from midtown to 53rd street twice. I also did twelve floors today and ate salad and soup basically and a bonus oatbran muffin. Going home tonight so I can prep more salads and make my own soup. Tomorrow is bike day and I can’t wait!

The Anti-Cancer Cancer Hospital Workout/Diet

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

Well I decided to stay with my mom in the hospital. This doesn’t excuse me from heathly living. In fact, it inspires me to the highest heights of health.

This is what I’ve done so far.

1. Walked from Chelsea Whole Food Market (one cup of coffee with organic whole milk and one packet of honey) to 53rd and Lexington Avenue to get the staff jitney. I refuse to pay for the subway when I can walk. Saturday I’ll be bringing my bicycle.

2. took two powerwalk breaks. The second one I did a little running.

3. I climbed the steps of Memorial Sloan and was having a near death experience at the 12th floor. I don’t care how much I can do at the gym. It’s nothing like real life except for the step mill. I went up 16 floors till I got to the roof exit and went back down to the elevator.
As for diet, this has been easy because anything ‘rich’ requires a kingly sum in NYC. I brought most of my food in, rice from a ricecooker, fresh juice, boiled eggs, carrot pulp from the juice machine. Tomorrow will be more challenging since I’m staying overnight and don’t have any extra food. I got a lentil soup and some salad from the hospital cafeteria. I’m not counting calories per se but I’m keeping an eye on intake of rich foods and staying away from the dessert case.
