return to the gym

Saturday, February 24th, 2007

I was a little slow at the gym today. This was my first time back since getting over my winter cold. Halfway through my workout I drank some green powder and felt powerful enough to run for another ten minutes. Not working out for six days took a little bit of a toll and pushed my gains back a bit. However, I was sick then and I’m not now. I felt great after a real good sauna session, washed me hair and such.

I bought a bunch of fruits because I’m afraid to buy greens and have them freeze in the broke down fridge that we have. I’m just gonna spend the little extra to buy the green powder for my workouts. It’s a MUST that I be prepared for this marathon. I forgot to buy my egglands eggs but no matter. I can get more frozen veggies when I go back to the store. Boy I can’t wait till the spring and summer when veggies are fresh and I can grow my own.

joining a gym…my experience thus far

Sunday, February 11th, 2007

I joined the local gym at long last because of the weather. I also need to socialise and be around other people. Sometimes the atmosphere at my house gets to me and affects my workouts so there it is. I joined the gym and had a great workout. I can see where machines would benefit me. Plus, my favorite place is the SAUNA. That sealed the deal for me. I got a family membership for everyone in the house. I’m hoping that fitness would spread throughout since most everyone is a little horizontally challenged.

I worked my back/biceps and did twenty minutes on various cardio machines testing out each one.

lat pulldown 2×12 50#

db row 2×12 25,30#

one arm db row 2×12 30#

deadlift 2×12 30#

SL deadlift 1×12 30#

bicep curl 2×12 15# 1×10 20#

hammer curl 2×12 15#  1×10#

- I was crowded out of the room by the highskrool fellas so I wasn’t able to do any barbell work.  I like the atmosphere. It’s not a pretty gym. It’s reminds me of the gym I used to go to in New York that was pretty hardcore. Lots of ex-cons, correction officers and other law enforcements types. The equipment is a little dated but hey it WORKS. The best treadmill is in the ladies room. I guess it’s for ladies of size who don’t wanna be around the fellas :D

omigod what a week…

Friday, February 9th, 2007

I worked my azz off this week. I prayed for extra money so my husband and I could join the local gym together. He will not go on his own as he feels very self conscious about his size :( Plus I need to get out of the house. Anyway, ask and you shall receive as they say so I worked two overnight shifts. It put a dent in my morning cardio so I cut back on eating a little bit. I managed to fit in a quick tricep workout before work and a ten minute meditation session in between assignments. Tomorrow I get to train for the marathon on the indoor walking track. I need to get going. It’s git-r-done time as far as being in shape to finish under six hours :o

working/working out for the weekend

Saturday, February 3rd, 2007

I passed on my morning rebounding workout. My rump was just hurting too much. I did get my leg workout in yesterday before work. I ended up staying till 4:30 am and did a significant amount of walking around even though it was third shift. The lunges I did were really focused but I did them with 20lb dumbbells. Oh yeah my azz is hurting but I’ve been doing the lunges for a while and instead of a fat, flabby old lady bum, it’s lifted and separated from my hammies instead of that amorphous eeewwwww.

‘Yesterday I kept track of what I was eating. I did well till I found out they needed help overnight after all. I had three small cheese slices of Dominoes which comes out to about 400 calories. Come to think of it, I probably could have eaten some of the eggs a resident’s family gave me. Anyway, this morning I had three eggs, some peanut butter on a slice of wheat bread with raisins and a lil bit of honey. I do not need to eat again till break time because that’s a lot. Boy there’s nothing like farm fresh eggs. I soft boiled them and ate them all, yolk and all because the yolk has all the nutrients in it. Yummmmmmy. The evening is going to be oriented towards more raw foods, lighter foods, etc. like my big green salad and green superfood powder.

mental toughness

Friday, February 2nd, 2007

I had a mixed day yesterday. I did not work out yesterday. It was my day off and I spent some quality time with my husband. Yesterday evening I had a conflict with my sister in law and it depressed me. I didn’t eat the whole bostom creme cake like I wanted to. Just had a small slice, emphasis on small because it was from Walmart. I mean if it was from Whole Foods, I probably would have eaten the rest of it *LOL*

Today I had two slices of wheat bread with natural peanut butter, raisins and a little cacao powder and half teaspoon of honey. Ate that after my morning rebounding workout, twenty minutes of it. I am going to do my calisthenic portion soon just because I’m still trying to figure out whether to work legs today. I’m working half an overnight shift and don’t wanna be sore in the morning. Lifting always makes me feel good before work though.

diet empowerment!

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

I leafed through some of the fat loss articles on bodybuilding.com last night. I’m going to reread a lot of them today because I got a good night’s sleep (thanks to a lil bit o’ melatonin). I woke up extremely energised considering I woke in the middle of the night extremely thirsty with a dry throat. You see I work in a nursing home with very poor air quality and also well…when I flush toilets ‘particulate matter’ goes up in the air. I use a wein mini air purifier I hang around my neck to purify my air. It really works and when I don’t have it, I get a little run down feeling for a few hours. Anyway, I thought I’d have a poor night’s sleep but I guess not. Batteries came to today too so I’m good.  I’m very moti vated to not get sick because it interferes with my workouts and also my ability to work overtime!

yesterday’s diet:

tuesday-
low quality wheatbread
banana
peanut butter
green salad
avocado
earl grey tea
coffee
peanut butter
vegetable soup
small salad bowl
two packs of graham crackers
small coffee
1/2 pb sandwich

My biggest victory was NOT eating when I got home. I didn’t eat anything or even have hot tea. Maybe that’s why I woke up so refreshed. I did my rebounding for 20 minutes. I think the more consistent I am, the longer I’ll be able to workout first thing in the morning.

Also, I met up with a resident’s husband who raises chickens as a hobby. So now I have a reliable source of healthy, cheap protein. Cheap because he’s giving me the eggs for…FREE.  No antibiotics, vegetarian grain fed chickens…I do not eat meat but I do use milk in my coffee and I eat a small amount of cheese. My budget is tightening a bit so I do not know if I will be able to afford hemp protein powder. Life isn’t perfect. Today I’ll eat two shrimp and that’s the most ‘meat’ I’ve had in about a year. I know that Jack Lalanne is a moderate vegetarian, eating fish occasionally and most everything else is steamed or raw.

Can’t thank the bodybuilding.com people for bodyspace.com! Oh yeah…later I’m going to do a combo of jump roping, rebounding and mountainclimbers to keep up with my marathon training. It’s cold outside and snow on the ground. It’s not safe to run on iced over snow. I am probably going to join a gym next week.
